A dozen reasons for training at CARISMA

rp_busyclass-300x203.jpgCARISMA has been around for over 16 years and over this long time we have been training thousands of people from all walks of life, both male and females aged from early teens to mid-sixties.  Many of the people who moved on, for one reason or another, keep writing back about how much they miss CARISMA and how unique this Cambridge based club is.  I thought it’s a good idea to list, for those of you who don’t know us yet, why you should join us at your first chance:

  1. Wealth of knowledge and experience: CARISMA is run by 7 instructors between head coach, instructors and assistant instructors. Most of them have been with the club 10 years or longer and they currently have combined martial arts experience of 100+ years.
  2. Four classes per week included in your monthly fee allow great flexibility for training very busy people as most of our members are.
  3. Calculated on 4 sessions per week our fees cost you between £1.61 and £2.19 per session.
  4. We specialise in American kickboxing as well as we understand, know and teach basic concepts or other martial arts and self-defence.
  5. Beginners are taught, nurtured and taken care of, allowing them to learn in a very safe environment.
  6. While we are constantly encouraging people to push their training beyond their comfort zone we do respect and accept that not everybody wants to be a fighter.
  7. The considerable number of advanced people we have in house is enough to match the more experienced new comers who are looking for a real challenge in their training.
  8. Our equal opportunity policy is encouraging the less skilled ones while rewarding the talented and committed.
  9. Members of CARISMA belong to a great variety of age range, weights, body sizes, experiences, nationalities and genders: you are likely to meet several people who match your style and preference of training.
  10. Apart from training many local residents who work in Cambridge we are the official coaching body for both the university of Cambridge kickboxing society (CUKBS) and Anglia Ruskin university kickboxing club (ARUKBC).
  11. We are a non-profit organisation so our fees keep the club running rather than paying salaries.
  12. CARISMA is a fun bunch and there are frequent informal events like drinks after training as well as regular social events like summer BBQ and Xmas dinner.

Just to conclude: CARISMA is the place for you to train in Cambridge.  Whether you are a beginner interested in learning the basics or an advanced looking for your next fighting challenge you should join us and you will find a stimulating environment to foster your passion.

Great start for CUKBS 2014

CUKBS 2014 big groupThe Cambridge University Kickboxing Society had a great fresher’s session last night with about 70 people attending which was following a very successful fresher’s fair when the committee received an unprecedented level of interest for the highly successful sport society.

in line with previous years the lesson attracted about 40 total beginners sowe started with a brief explanation about what CUKBS is, does and why people should stick to it.  CUKBS is the place for people interested in a challenging discipline which will make them stronger, faster, more agile and capable of fighting.  It’s also the place to train because:

  • it recently achieved a half blue status;
  • it has a track record of 4 consecutive Varsity victories and its team is simply undefeated since 2010;
  • in 2014 it was one of three only sports which won a Varsity match: the other two were orienteering and cycling.

After the short intro there was a usual warm up activity for the whole group then, thanks to the presence of 2 extra CARISMA instructors, we split the class in three groups:

  • Total beginners run by Massimo; we collected here all people who have never practiced a martial art.  This lesson was purely no contact and teaching a few basic techniques.
  • Intermediate run by Georgios; we gathered here people who has some relevant experience in striking martial arts and we had the opportunity of assessing their skills
  • Advanced group run by Jarek: committee members, Varsity team members and a few other students from the previous years joined this group.

Toward the end of the lesson we showed to the beginners what kickboxing looks like when performed by advanced people.  The level of participation and interest was very high throughout the lesson and for quite some time after its end we are all looking forward to the next session.  See below a few pictures, taken toward the end:

CUKBS wins Varsity Kickboxing 2014

Varsity2014It is with great pride and pleasure that I can announce that on Saturday 8 March the Cambridge University Kickboxing Society (CUKBS) won, once more and for the 4th consecutive time, the Varsity Kickboxing tournament against Oxford University Kickboxing.

We will add details about the individual fights at a later stage but I feel it is  important to write this little post just to officially state our victory, already strongly celebrated on Facebook.

Congratulations to all fighters Anna, Francesca, Prithvi, Tim, Raz, Dom and Kostas that all contributed to this victory. A great thank you to all members of CUKBS, ARUKBC and CARISMA which helped with training and preparation for these fighters.  A super special thanks goes also to Duncan, Georgios, James and Jarek which all helped and contributed, with their expertise and efforts, to train and prepare these fighters. Videos and further information about the fights will follow in due course.
